BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — Seniors in Baton Rouge have been surprised with a special gift from Mayor-President Sharon Weston Broome. After continuous high-temperature days, Mayor Broome, the East Baton Rouge Council on Aging, and the Capital Area United Way have collectively donated 50 air conditioning units, thanks to Nucor Steel Louisiana. Additional units are being taken to Council on Aging agencies around Baton Rouge.

BATON ROUGE, La. (WAFB) - Fifty air conditioning units will be provided for seniors in EBR in response to high temperatures, officials said. South Louisiana has experienced several weeks of high temperatures, with the heat index rising above 100 degrees, posing health risks to the elderly, officials added.

Baton Rouge, LA – July 21, 2023 – In response to the prolonged period of high temperatures, Mayor-President Sharon Weston Broome partnered with the East Baton Rouge Council on Aging and Capital Area United Way, to provide 50 air-conditioning units for seniors in EBR, thanks to a donation by Nucor Steel Louisiana. Additional air conditioning units are being provided to Council on Aging agencies in surrounding communities, including St. James Parish where Nucor Steel Louisiana is located.

Senior Skip Day 2.0 will be held on Thursday, April 27th from 9:00 A.M. to 2:00 P.M. at the BREC Airline Highway Park (17200 Airline Hwy.) The event is an opportunity for all seniors to “skip” a day at the senior center and come together to fellowship at Senior Skip Day 2.0 & Healthcare Expo instead. Senior Skip Day 2.0 and the Healthcare Expo are open to all seniors aged 60 and older who reside in East Baton Rouge Parish. Gulf Coast Housing Partnership and the East Baton Rouge Council on Aging have opened the Lotus Village Senior Living Community, a 56-building, 116-unit affordable senior housing community located at 1600 Gracie St. and 715 N. 16th St. in Baton Rouge, La.

GCHP received a $750,000 Affordable Housing Program (AHP) subsidy from Red River Bank and FHLB Dallas.
