The East Baton Rouge Council on Aging (EBRCOA) currently operates 21 Congregate ( Hot ) Meal Senior Centers and 4 Nutritional Meal Sites throughout EBR Parish. In addition to providing a hot, nutritionally balanced meal to older adults in our area, these facilities provide a variety of health and fitness activities, arts and crafts, and numerous other activities designed to break the social isolation faced by many older adults.

Congregate (Hot) Meal Sites:

Commonly referred to as “Senior Centers,” these sites are open to all EBR Parish residents aged 60 years and older. These sites provide a daily meal, a wide verity of activities and programs, and most importantly an opportunity for older adults to interact and socialize with their peers in a safe and supportive environment.

Nutritional Meal Sites:

Unlike the Congregate Meal Sites, these locations do not provide the full range of programs and activities, as their counterparts. Typically located in senior living facilities and other similar locations with a high population of older adults, these sites ensure that our elders maintain access to a nutritionally balanced meal.

Home-Delivered Meals/Meals on Wheels:

EBR Parish residents aged 60 years or older who are disabled, homebound/convalescent, or otherwise unable to prepare their own food are eligible to receive frozen meals delivered to their home on a weekly basis. Like the congregate meals, these meals are prepared fresh daily. Meals are plated and packaged similarly to other frozen dinners. These meals are both oven and microwave safe. Each Meals on Wheels delivery includes seven (7) frozen meals, one (1) gallon of milk, bread, butter, fresh fruit, and healthy snacks.

Fitness and Wellness:

In addition to providing a nutritionally balanced meal, Congregate Meal sites also provide programs and activities designed to promote physical health and well-being. These include physical activities such as yoga, tai chi, chair exercise, and water aerobics, as well as programmatic activities like Nutrition Wellness, Mental Health Wellness, Matter of Balance.

EBRCOA sponsors numerous programs throughout the parish focusing on health and wellness – all in hopes of providing stimulating, social, healthy, proactive lifestyle option for the aging.
